CASE STUDY

Melbourne’s Western Roads upgrade from Footscray to Werribee was undertaken to improve and maintain more than 260km of road, but its scope and staged construction necessitated a highly flexible, responsive traffic management system that kept drivers informed.

J1-LED’s solution was to design, manufacture and deliver eight C-Size VMS trailers, equipped with BATTS receivers.  The BATTS devices listen for passing Bluetooth signals, calculate the travel time between receivers, and almost instantly relay the information for display by the portable VMS trailer.  The system is vastly more responsive than traditional loop systems, as loop systems require the vehicle to come to a virtual stop before slowed traffic is detected.

Apart from being a flexible solution that can be  transported as the construction continues, project outcomes include accurate travel times displayed,  decreased road congestion and  increased driver awareness.
